First thing first – what is an ISO container?

ISO containers are commonly known as shipping containers and are typically used to transport all sorts of goods, from heavy metals to food and liquids.

Thanks to their versatility and efficiency, they are the perfect solution for global shipping operations via trucks, boats, or trains, but they can also act as secure storage rooms and for construction purposes.

What Does ISO Stand for in Shipping Containers?

The acronym ISO stands for International Organisation for Standardisation. The organisation doesn’t actually manufacture shipping containers but rather sets the standards and rules each cargo unit must comply with.

ISO containers are renowned for their solidity and sturdiness, as they are designed to withstand harsh, adverse weather. This is because they are usually adopted to carry items aboard trains and boats that leave them exposed to all kinds of conditions.

So, if you’re thinking about getting a shipping container to store your items and work equipment, rest assured that your tools will be kept safe all year round.

History of ISO Containers

Believe it or not, shipping containers originated in the 18th century when wooden barrels were used to sail goods across the sea from one country – or continent – to the next.

However, when it comes to cargo containers as we know them today, the development of ISO units can be traced back to the mid-1950s. This is when the ISO established the universal standards for intermodal containers to favour transportation and facilitate the operations of ports around the world.

Since then, ISO containers have been the standard units for global shipping. All containers adhere to specific standards, strengths, and measurements, allowing workers to transfer goods from one place to another in an efficient, cost-effective manner.

What are the ISO Standards?

As mentioned, the ISO establishes the official standards for shipping containers, ensuring both safety and compatibility when carrying items and goods.

The ISO lists a wide range of standards that containers need to abide by, but some of the most noticeable ones include:

  • ISO 668:2013 – This standard indicates the base dimensions of shipping containers so that they can be consistently stacked, transported, and handled all over the globe.
  • ISO 6346 – This standard sets the right coding, marking, and identification for shipping containers. Each container requires a unique identification code, allowing professionals to track its whereabouts at all times.
  • ISO 1496 – This standard established the structural integrity of each shipping container, ensuring it’s able to withstand all weather conditions.

Features of ISO Containers

To ensure the safety of goods and items stored within them, ISO containers are designed with a few handy features.

In addition to presenting heavy-duty locking mechanisms to avoid theft and tie-down points to secure goods during transit, ISO containers are fitted with ventilation and forklift pockets.

When it comes to ventilation, shipping cargos have holes or vents that allow air to circulate inside the container. This actively prevents the build-up of condensation, reducing the risk of damage to the goods or equipment stored in the unit.

As for forklift pockets, every ISO container is equipped with pockets on the bottom corners that enable forklift trucks to lift and move the unit with ease.

Benefits of an ISO Container

Whether it’s for transportation or storage requirements, ISO containers can bring a wide range of benefits to keep your business on the right track. Some of the most appealing advantages of these sturdy containers include:

Efficiency

Thanks to their versatile and reliable nature, ISO containers guarantee efficiency at all times – no matter what sector you operate in. For example, if you require more space to keep your equipment, ISO cargo units can provide you with the perfect environment for all your tools.

Security

Because of its structural integrity and standardised dimensions, an ISO container allows for uniform locking and a solid constitution.

In addition to having a unique identification code, an ISO container can also be fitted with additional security measures, such as padlocks and alarm systems. This gives it an extra layer of protection and security to offer you the peace of mind you deserve.

Durability

As mentioned, ISO containers are designed to withstand harsh weather conditions. Built with steel, these cargo units are sturdy and durable, meaning you can make the most of them for years and years.

Types of ISO Container

As long as they meet the right ISO standards, ISO containers can be found in all shapes, types, and sizes.

Based on how much extra room you need for your site or for storage, you can choose from a significant range of different dimensions. At Cleveland Containers, we stock 10ft, 20ft, and even 40ft containers.

We also have several types of containers to suit your business and operations. For example, if you require more space but don’t have much room to play with, high cube ISO containers can do the trick. Standing at 9ft 6in (2.9m), they are one foot taller than standard units and are available in traditional 20ft and 40ft lengths.

Likewise, if you need a place to store some weirdly shaped items that are tricky to store from the side, you can opt for open top ISO containers.

Identical to all standard containers, open top options don’t have a metal roof. Instead, they have a tarp top, allowing for more flexibility when loading your cargo.

So, thinking about purchasing or hiring shipping containers for your business? Still have some questions about the ins and outs of ISO containers? Feel free to get in touch with us – the team at Cleveland Containers is always on hand to answer any queries you may have.
